The News of the World phone-hacking scandal is a long-running dispute in British media and politics centred on the tabloid Sunday newspaper the News of the World, and its former Editor, Andy Coulson. Although Coulson resigned during the initial police investigation in 2007, he is currently employed as one of the highest-paid Special Advisers to the UK Government, acting as David Cameron's Communications Director.

Royal Mobile Phones Targeted

The phone-tapping scandal initially erupted in 2007, when News of the World Royal Correspondent Clive Goodman and a private investigator, Glenn Mulcare, were jailed for conspiring to access the mobile phones of royal aides. The Prince of Wales and his sons William and Harry were among the targets, as illegal attempts were made to access their mobile phone voicemail in-boxes.

Andy Coulson, then editor of the News of the World, resigned over the scandal, but within six months was working for David Cameron and the Conservative Party; the paper claimed that this was an isolated case, and that no other surveillance had taken place.
